چکیده
We study large scale surface deformations of a liquid film unstable due to the Marangoni effect caused by external heating on a smooth and solid substrate. The work is based on the thin film equation which can be derived from the basic hydrodynamic equations. To prevent rupture, a repelling disjoining pressure is included which accounts for the stabilization of a thin precursor film and so prevents the occurrence of completely dry regions. Linear stability analysis, nonlinear stationary solutions, as well as three-dimensional time dependent numerical solutions for horizontal and inclined substrates reveal a rich scenario of possible structures for several realistic fluid parameters. Numerical simulation of the Marangoni e#ect on mass transfer to single slowly moving drops in the liquid–liquid system
The Marangoni e#ect is a frequently observed phenomenon of enhancement of interphase mass transfer in liquid–liquid systems. Such an e#ect, originating from the hydrodynamic instability induced by surface tension sensitivity to surface concentration of transferred solute, is mathematically formulated and numerically simulated for slowly moving single spherical drops in an axisymmetric boundary-...
متن کاملA Multiple Scales Approach to Evaporation Induced Marangoni Convection
This paper considers the stability of thin liquid layers of binary mixtures of a volatile (solvent) species and a non-volatile (polymer) species. Evaporation leads to a depletion of the solvent near the liquid surface. If surface tension increases for lower solvent concentrations, sufficiently strong compositional gradients can lead to Bénard-Marangoni-type convection that is similar to the kin...
متن کاملRayleigh-Marangoni convection in a critical fluid: a tale of two crossovers.
We show that if we take a thin layer of fluid where surface tension effects are supposed to dominate and gradually bring the mean temperature of the layer closer and closer to the liquid vapor critical point, then first there is a crossover from Marangoni to Rayleigh-Benard convection and thence to a convection whose onset is determined by the Schwarzchild criterion.
متن کاملThe Hysteresis Phenomena of Flow Patterns due to Thermal and Solutal Marangoni Convections in a Liquid Bridge under Zero Gravity
The floating zone (FZ) method is one of the growth techniques used to grow single crystal materials. FZ growth is achieved in a containerless environment (without a crucible) by the movement of a molten zone of a solid rod, which forms a free-standing liquid bridge between two solid sections. However, the surface tension along the free surface of the molten zone varies due to temperature and co...
